HCI research in the School of Informatics has received a major investment from the School and the University of Manchester. In particular, the area has recently been strengthened by the appointment of Professor Stephen Payne and Dr Andrew Howes. The group researches the theory, methods and tools to improve the quality of human computer interaction. It also focuses on HCI-in-the-large, (user-centred design of socio-technical systems) as well as HCI-in-the-small (design of interactive artefacts). Our research has a strong commitment to theory. You will share this commitment. Precise area of interest is open, ranging from social approaches to CSCW and computing in context, through cognitive approaches to the psychology of individual users to novel technological approaches to user interface design.
It is likely you will have a background in Psychology, Social Science or Interactive Computing, and will be interested in theoretical aspects of HCI. You will have your own research agenda but will be attracted by the extraordinary opportunities for collaboration in HCI research at Manchester.
