About 2 years ago, I contacted several notable people to share the
idea of an Open-access journal on cognition, humans and safety. They
all reacted positively, which convinced me that the idea should be
pushed further. I am now in a position where I would like to move this
forward.
Summary:
1- Where are we now?
2- What I am doing right now
3- What I am asking for
--------------------
1- Where are we now?
--------------------
At it stands, the project of an Open-access journal now aims to cover
Human-Machine Interaction, with a title something like "Humans and
Automation". Potential topics include cognitive ergonomics and
technology, interfaces and human performance, human error when
interacting with machines, design and testing of technology, human
performance in control and supervision, etc. Fairly open for now,
anyway.
2- What I am doing right now
----------------------------
I am currently writing the project proposal to get funds from the
European "eContents" programme. If this turns out to be
successful,
only 50% of the eligible costs will be funded. That's their funding
rule. It implies that I have to find external sources of funding but
for the time being, this is further down on our agenda. The main bit
is the writing up, which is going OK so far. I already sent a
pre-proposal in and got comments without any negative feedback.
The deadline for submission is Nov 24th, which doesn't leave that
much time, given the financial forms that have to be filled in by the
host institution (Ncl Uni, as I write). BTW, if anyone is interested
in reading and commenting the proposal, just raise your hand: I am
hoping to get a draft ready in some days.
3- What I am asking for
-----------------------
In order to demonstrate support for the proposal, I would like people
to reply letting me know if they think it is the sort of journal they
would like to read or write for. If people would be happy to
explicitly endorse the idea too, that would be very useful. In the
future, if the funds get allocated, we will need (among others) a
scientific board but for now, just an informal endorsement will do.
Hope to hear from you soon. Don't hesitate to cascade this email around
you.
Questions and comments welcome, of course.
Regards,
Denis Besnard
