Subject: PhD scholarship in Chinese mobility
Dear colleagues,
I have obtained funding for a three-year, stipend-carrying PhD scholarship
to work on a topic related to increased Chinese mobility across the Yunnan-
Laos/Vietnam/Burma borders. The application deadline is 31 November. I am
attaching the announcement and would be grateful if you passed it on to
anyone interested.
In addition, two Masters scholarships are available for a three- semester
period, with no stipend, in the Applied Anthropology programme, primarily
intended for professionals who need to deal with cultural claims in their

A PhD research scholarship is available at Macquarie University in the
Department of Anthropology for a project that will investigate the effects
of increased population mobility in the border region of Chinašs Yunnan
Province, Laos, Thailand, and Burma. The scholarship holder will contribute
to research in one of the following areas: the role of increased cross-
border migration in sociocultural changes in the countryside in China and
the neighbouring countries; reconfiguration of ethnic minority identities;
changing views of China and the Chinese in neighbouring countries; spatial
effects of Chinese tourism; the relationship between internal and
international migration in the region; and the impact of migration on
health (in particular the spread of HIV).
Applicants should have completed a four year undergraduate degree in a
relevant discipline (Anthropology, Sociology, or Asian Studies) with first
class honours, or an equivalent qualification, as well as fluency in
Chinese or one of the other languages of the region under investigation.
Applications are open to citizens of all countries. The successful
applicant if an Australian citizen/permanent resident, or a New Zealand
citizen, would receive a RAACE award; other International applicants would
receive an iMURS award. The stipend for the award is currently $18,837 per
annum, tax exempt, and the tenure is 3 years full time subject to
satisfactory progress. The award will commence on 1 March 2006 or as
negotiated.
