Hi Clive,
Good to know about a DSpace repository that is being developed for e-
learning. I checked the repository's complete learning object
collection and found that the objects are packaged with the IMS spec
and works with the RELOAD tool. Haven't actually come across DSpace
LOR implementation within the UK. So may be you're the first?
Also like the look and feel which corresponds to your Moodle
environment. Are you considering Moodle/DSpace integration, e.g.
planning to make DSpace object appearing in Moodle? If so, you may be
interested in talking to the d+ team who is working on ELF search
service with DSpace being one of the targets.
Would be interested to find out your views on maintaining DC/LOM
interoperability in DSpace since it does not support IMS/IEEE schemas
natively. For example, will it requires considerable development to
modify the DC-based metadata facilities to LOM?
We are undertaking a similar digital library pilot here to develop a
repository to store grid computing training resources from an
European project and to make them reusable for other training
contexts in the UK. See: http://wiki.nesc.ac.uk/read/egee-elearning/
- only in prototype stage. We opted for Fedora mainly because it is
service oriented with web service APIs for accessing and managing
(CMS) objects. It also treats metadata and content equally as managed
assets for versioning and history etc. Fedora also allows the
association of web service with object. For example, you may want to
convert metadata from DC to LOM/CP by means of dynamic mapping; no
need to maintain static metadata/content which are subject to changes.
Regards,
Boon
