Owen is testing the upgrade from 1.5.2/1.5.3 and from 1.6.5
to 1.6.6 (which is a much bigger step than the version numbering
suggests) and will give a status report at the phone conference
tomorrow.

Subject: dCache 1.6.6 available
dCache 1.6.6 is finally available. Checkout www.dcache.org for
details. A lot of things changed. Therefor we strongly recommend you
make yourself familiar with the installation chapters in "dCache, the
Book" at
http://www.dcache.org/manuals/Book
before touching our current system.
We would like to draw your attention to some topics which you should
checkout in "The Book" for details.
Whenever you feel uncertain about something, contact us at

Best regards
Your dCache Team
.................................................................
Upgrading versus Fresh installations
------------------------------------
Fresh installations should be rather painless when following
the instructions in "The Book". Depending on your current
version of dCache and on how much you customized your old
installation, upgrading might need some tweaking. Using your
existing config/dCacheSetup file should do the right thing.
Within the next days we will complete The Book to help you
moving from the existing config/dCacheSetup to the new one.
Postgres database
-----------------
Some of the dCache components need access to a database.
The dCache team decided to use Postgres as database back-end.
Although any modern version of postgres will do, we recommend
to go for postgres 8.0 or 8.1, if available. They come with
some rather convenient features concerning backup and
synchronization.
Postgres - pnfs
---------------
1.6.6 is coming with a new implementation of the pnfs filesystem.
It is intended to solve upcoming performance shortcuts for
huge pnfs installations. Upgrading pnfs is independet of 1.6.6.
You may do this at any time. We recommend to upgrade dCache first
and decide about upgrading pnfs after reading the appropriate
chapters in the BOOK.
Companion
---------
"Companion" is a dCache developer term for accelerating the
access to internal information within dCache. Enabled, it will
speed up the time, dCache needs to open a file. Fresh dCache
installations will make use of the companion by default. For
Upgraded installations, sysadmins need to do this intentionally.
Please consult "The Book" for details.
SRM SpaceReservation
---------------------
Following our tests, SRM Space Reservation is working fine even
with LCG tools now. Unfortunately we couldn't test this sufficiently
before packaging 1.6.6. Therefor the default setup has Space
Reservation switched off. BUT we recommend to switch
SpaceReservation
on in the dCacheSetup files. (Check The Book)
Please provide feedback on your experience with this feature.
FTP Performance Marker
----------------------
Performance Markers are available in 1.6.6 and are enabled by
default. Please consult the "Book" for details.
VO Subdirectories
------------------
Within this week we will provide advise on how to create VO
directories
in pnfs. Although you may do this yourself already now, some tricks
will improve scalability and performance.
Support
-------
Please make use of [log in to unmask] for any questions or problems
you want to report. In addition you may ask for a phone conference
with the support team if you need to upgrade a large installation
or if you need to build up a big system.
