I would be happy to undertake this "mission" if I can obtain the
reference book(s). Though I was born in 1955, my first reading
of Spencer began just a few years ago. I was startled to find in
the "To His Booke" section of "The Shepheardes Calendar" a
concept virtually identical to my intent for a book of short
stories (called "Apostles") that I have been contemplating for
many years. Since then, I have studied all of Spencer's literary
works.
That may not be sufficient grounding in Spencer for me to be
able to provide commentary that would be useful to anyone on
this list (I'm not even an English professor, so, while I'm
passionate about literature, and do a lot of reading in my free
time, my accumulated years of study are tiny compared to all of
you).
But, if you'd like the opinion of someone who loves Spencer and
feels an intellectual kinship with him, but who has read almost
no criticism of his works -- I'd be happy to study the
references you've mentioned (if I can find them) and provide my
comments.
Sincerely,
Kevin Farnham
