Perhaps more likely to have been for iron? Apparently first
discovered by the Geol. Surv. in 1933, the orebody consisted of
massive magnetite, 60-70% iron, with a very low phosphorous
content. An adit was opened by the Scottish Home Office Dept. during
investigations between 1941-43.(see www. fettes.com for further
details).
Chromite, copper and talc were also mined at various times.
