The Achill Heinrich Böll Association are organising a Heinrich Böll
Memorial Weekend which will take place on October 14th and 15th 2005 in
Dugort village Achill Island Co Mayo. This will be an annual event which

The principle speakers are writer Hugo Hamilton, and Dr. Gisela Holfter
(University of Limerick). There will be a first showing of the English
translation of the 1961 film 'Irland und seine Kinder' (Children of Eire)
written and presented by Heinrich Böll, as well as art exhibitions by
resident Artists. The weekend will also include guided walks in the
footsteps of Heinrich Böll and readings from his 'Irisches Tagebuch'
(Irish Journal).

Heinrich Böll was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 1972 and remains
an extremely important cultural figure in Germany and Europe. His home in
Dugort Achill has been in use as a residency for writers since 1992. The
residency provides a secluded and private environment for writers, and
access for the resident island community to cultural and artistic events. It
also builds on the existing tradition and reputation of Achill Island as a
place of inspiration for writers and artists, and serves as an appropriate
memorial to Heinrich Böll . The continuing writers residency is funded by
