The Mass Media in Post-Soviet Russia
International Conference
6-8 April 2006
University of Surrey
Call for Papers (by 15 October)
This conference is organised jointly by the School of Arts at the University of Surrey, and the
BASEES Study Group for Culture and the Media [http://www.basees.org.uk/sgcm.html], and is partly
funded by the AHRB grant awarded to Professor Stephen Hutchings for a three-year project focusing on
post-Soviet television culture [http://www.surrey.ac.uk/lcts/lvmg/ahrb2-web.htm].
In light of Russia's continuing propensity for undergoing radical cultural and socio-political
transformation, the conference aims to explore the role of the mass media (television, papers,
journals, radio, and the internet) in the post-Soviet period. We would welcome contributions on a
wide range of topics, such as the media and Russia's 'war on terror', the media and democracy, the
media and civic society, how the media are helping shape/being shaped by Putin's presidency,
questions of media ownership, television and post-Soviet consumer culture, the media and national
identity, etc. Scholars of Cultural/Media Studies, Politics and the Social Sciences, as well
practising journalists are encouraged to submit proposals.
The DEADLINE for the submission of paper proposals is 15 OCTOBER 2005.
The publication of a volume of conference papers is envisaged.
Keynote speakers include Vladimir Pozner. Further speaker to be confirmed.
The conference will be held at the University of Surrey, conveniently located in the old market town
of Guildford only 40-minutes away by train from central London and close to the two main UK
international airports, Heathrow and Gatwick.
Further enquiries as well as proposals for papers or panels should be sent to
[log in to unmask] with a short, 300 word abstract.
