I am puzzled.
You are seeking to conduct research regarding "domestic abuse of disabled
women" and yet you wish to speak to "Disabled women with physical and
sensory impairment who have experienced
domestic abuse, and statutory and voluntary agencies who provide services
for this
group."
Why only "physical and sensory impairment"?
Are you not interested in talking with women who are learning disabled?
Who have mental health problems?
Who have neuro-diverse conditions?
Are such women less vulnerable to domestic abuse then those with physical or
sensory impairments or non-disabled women?
Do they not have specific vulnerbilities due to the nature of their
impairments/conditions?

Subject: NEW RESEARCH - DOMESTIC ABUSE OF DISABLED WOMEN
Dear all,
I write to inform you of new research exploring disabled women's experiences
of domestic abuse, of existing service provision, and of available service
provision for this group. This research is managed by the Women's Aid,
funded by
the Big Lottery Fund, and will be conducted over a duration of two and a
half
years by a research team based at University of Bristol and Warwick. Full
details are below.
Best wishes
Pauline Magowan
New Research on Domestic Violence and Disability
In September 2005, a new and groundbreaking research project is taking
place,
investigating disabled women's experiences of domestic violence, in tandem
with an exploration into existing service provision for disabled women
experiencing abuse. This study is managed by Women's Aid, and will be
conducted by a
research team based at the University of Bristol and Warwick. The team
comprise
of disabled and non-disabled women, who possess a wealth of experience
surrounding disability and domestic violence issues, and will be advised by
disabled
women/organizations and Women's Aid.
Research aims
· to develop a coherent and comprehensive understanding of the needs of
disabled women experiencing domestic violence;
· to investigate the scope of existing provision and identify what disabled
abused women need from this provision;
· to identify gaps in assistance to disabled women experiencing abuse both
within disability services and domestic violence services;
· to identify and examine examples of good practice and policy;
· to make recommendations for policy and for service development in the
fields of community provision and health and social services to meet these
identified needs.
We are looking to speak to:
Disabled women with physical and sensory impairment who have experienced
domestic abuse, and statutory and voluntary agencies who provide services
for this
group.
We would appreciate your help in the following ways:
For disabled women who have experienced domestic abuse:
1. We will be conducting an initial informal consultation with disabled
women
who have experienced violence and with refuge services that have
particularly
worked on disability.
2. We will be conducting an initial focus group of disabled women who have
experienced domestic violence in Manchester on 25th November.
For service providers
We will be undertaking a survey of both local domestic violence and
disability services to examine existing provision for disabled women.
If you are able to assist, please contact us in the strictest confidence.
(We will return all calls, and reimburse travel costs)
