Call for Papers for Journal of Design History Special Issue on Oral History.
Editor: Linda Sandino, Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London
Working Title: Hearing Things: Design History and Oral History
Rationale:
This Special Issue will begin to explore the use and contribution of oral history interviews to
Design History. It will address the issue of the creation of different forms of evidence arising from
audio and visual interviews which demonstrate the various approaches and methods of
interrogating such material. It will thus combine primary research in the field of Design History
with an examination of the methodologies employed by historians to understand the meaning of
narrated pasts and material artefacts by means of the dialogic encounter of the interview.
The proposed Special Issue Hearing Things: Design History and Oral History will provide an
opportunity to assess historiographic concerns about the role of individual agency in the historical
process, and how to represent individual experience within the framework of collective memory
about past events and objects. It will thereby, it is hoped, bring to the fore an engagement with
the discipline itself as ‘history’ which the paradigm of Cultural History and Material Culture Studies
has tended to suppress, notwithstanding the fruitful insights these approaches have provided.
