A call for papers from SIS (with apologies for cross-posting):
PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SPACES IN ITALIAN CULTURE
Society for Italian Studies interim conference
London, Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies
21-22 April 2006
Call for papers
In recent years, issues of space, place and everyday life have become
fruitful topics of research and reflection. This conference seeks to bring
together researchers across a variety of disciplines to focus on public and
private spaces in Italian culture over several centuries. It aims to
investigate the roles and uses of spaces as well as to consider
representations and perceptions. It will also focus on liminal areas (where
the spheres of public and private merge, meet or clash). It is hoped that
both the specificity of given spaces in Italian culture and Italian
variants of spaces also found elsewhere will be covered.
Among the topics on which papers are welcomed are the following:
- Public spaces such as piazze, theatres, schools, libraries, streets and
neighbourhoods. - Private spaces including domestic interiors, gardens,
salons, artists’ studios, writers’ studies. - Places of exchange and
consumption like shops and cafes, but also theatres, cinemas and brothels.
- Architecture and architectural spaces. - Monuments, ruins, and ‘places of
memory’. - The relationship between individuals, groups and spaces. -
Spatial preoccupations and themes in the work of writers, artists and
film-makers. - Stages and sets - Non-places (possibly including railway
stations, airports, motorways and shopping malls).
Proposals for papers in English or Italian should be 200-300 words long and
should include the following information: name, paper title, institutional
affiliation, status.
Proposals should be sent to the organizer, Simona Storchi
