It seems that if I don't ask questions, and Richard Coates doesn't answer them, this list goes dead.
So in an attempt to revive it, I ask: part of the main street of Hexham is called Priestpopple. It is on the way
to the church, but "popple" seems mysterious. There is of course a Poppleton near York. The OE word
for pebble is recorded with almost every combination of vowels, and is said to be of obscure origin.
It is also rather hard to tell apart from the word for poplar. Any suggestions?
