Hi Paul
Just back from a Departments retreat and thinking about the talk for the Discourse unit. Just a couple of questions if OK....
I presume, from looking trhough the list of topics, (but of course could be wrong) that the unit is not a discourse analysis unit, rather a group of people from different disciplines looking at issues in a critical, reflective way. Is this a fair assumption? If not can you give me some idea of the context of the group?
Is it an informal presentation of ideas? Or is a more formal presentation preferred? How long?
I am involved in a number of projects att he moment but the 3 I think may be most interesting are:
1. I am looking, with 2 colleagues, at 'unpacking' some of the assumptions of palliative care....we are using discourse analysis and looking at issues of client (usually termed patients in pc) power and identity
2. We have recently completed qual evaluation of a community based 'one stop shop' for victims of family and domestic violence. DVAS Central (Domestic Violence Advocacy Agency) is a multi-agency response to DV, it has people from a variety of Govt and non Govt agencies on site and is co-ordinated by a refuge rather than by the police or Govt dept and is a first in Australia. Some of the findings are v interesting.
3. I was also involved in a project with people from our environmental management dept looking qualitatively at sense of place and its relationship with (severe) environmental degradation in the SW region of WA. Ruth (the main researcher) challenges the emphasis on the individual in SOP research and her findings are extremely rich and q moving.
Any suggestions of which one would be of most interest would be welcome or even if u can indicate if I am 'off the mark' and that something else would be more appropriate.
Thanks for your input -
Best wishes
Moira
