CALL FOR CHAPTERS
Submission Deadline: October 15, 2005
"Information and Communication Technologies in Support of the Tourism Industry"
A book edited by Wayne Pease, University of Southern Queensland, Australia,
Michelle Rowe, Edith Cowan University, Australia and
Prof. Malcolm Cooper, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Japan
Introduction
Tourism is perhaps the leading industry worldwide. In 2004, the tourism sector represented approximately 10.4 percent of global Gross Domestic Product and provided approximately 214 million jobs, or 8.1 percent of global employment, and is continuing to grow. One of the opportunity/problem areas is in the exchange of information within and external to the tourism industry. New information technologies are dramatically transforming spatial relationships within the industry, at every scale from local to global. This book will examine that process of transformation. It will be about the changes that modern electronic communications are supporting, or could support, in the world of tourism, not only geographically but in terms of culture, economics, marketing, social and regional issues.
The Overall Objective of the Book
The book will be an in-depth examination of the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the area of tourism (cybertourism) from a theoretical as well as a practical viewpoint, in an edited paper format. The main aim of the book is to enhance the reader's knowledge - especially from a multidisciplinary perspective rather than from an individual functional perspective - of cybertourism, as well as exploring the role of information technology in the evolving world of tourism in the 21st Century. This book will overview the development of cybertourism from a number of perspectives, including historical, geographical and social viewpoints while focusing on the Asia Pacific region. Cybertourism is best examined in terms of its social ramifications, and especially their geographical and political and economic (or political economy) contexts, at and between different levels, including the local, the regional and the global.
The Target Audience
Professionals, students and researchers working in the fields of tourism and information and communication technologies (ICT) are the target audience for this book. At the same time, the book will be pitched at a level so as to also appeal to a more general readership in the tourism industry sector. Moreover, the book, by demonstrating the increasing importance of tourism in the university curriculum, will have an appeal as a core book for tourism courses at the university level in the Asia Pacific, European, and North American regions. This book would be a ready-made teaching resource for the tourism training institutes in less-developed countries. The book aims to create a knowledge resource with which to describe best practice in tourism and the use of ICT within this industry sector.
