If 64bit OSX does not allow any graphics to be produced, it doesn't
sound like a very useful platform!

I guess it would probably be a good idea to do this work on a branch
rather than on the trunk since it will probably break other things until
you have got it right. For instance, dis-entangling the way kpg1_asset
handles colours, etc, could be fiddly. Also, changing the monolith names
could have implications for polpack:polka.

I've just created a 6GB container file containing an array of 3 NDFs with
array components of varying sizes up to 2GB, and hdstrace seems to work
OK.
