medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (23. September) is the feast day of:
Linus (d. c. 78) Early lists of the bishops of Rome name Linus as
the successor of Peter. Next to nothing is known of L. Irenaeus
identifies him with the Linus of II Timothy; the Liber Pontificalis
says he was Tuscan. Traditionally, L. was regarded as a martyr (with
no evidence) and his feast was removed from the universal calendar in
1969 (although he still appears in the Roman canon of the mass.
Adomnan of Iona (d. 704) Adomnan was a member of the lineage of St.
Columba/Columcille. He became a monk and was elected abbot of Iona
in 679. A was a scholar (and author of a vita of Columba); he was
also politically active, negotiating between rulers and winning
general agreement among the Irish kings for protection of women and
children in wartime. A's cult was active in both Ireland and
Scotland.
Helen of Bologna (blessed) (d. 1520) Elena Duglioli was the daughter
of a Bolognese notary. She wanted to become a nun but her parents
married her off at the age of 17; she proceeded to have a long and
happy marriage. H. was popularly acclaimed as a holy woman, although
it's not really clear (at least to me) why. Her cult was confirmed
in 1828.
Christopher, Antony, and John (d. 1527/9) The proto-martyrs of
Mexico. One was the son of the Tlaxcalan chieftain Axotecatl, who
sent the kids off to a newly-founded Franciscan boarding school. Dad
later decided that that was a bad idea, when "Christopher" (the
eldest son's baptismal name) became very pious and came home and
destroyed the family's cult objects. So dad beat him to death.
Antony was also an aristocratic boy; John was apparently A's servant.
They both attended the Franciscan school and started to help the
missionaries---by entering people's homes and breaking up their holy
objects---they were clubbed to death. The three were beatified in
1990.
