I was under the impression you need the right schema to open an xml
document in a readable form. Does anyone know if the correct one is
downloadable from the FISH website? Unfortunately I can't check until I
get home tonight as it's a blocked website because it contains the word
forum in its URL!

We're in a similar situation to you - although our in-house database is
in
MS Access 2000.
I've run the data past our IT department and apparently its fairly easy
to
import XML into MS Access 2003, so they are currently looking into this
option. If possible I'm hoping we can turn it into a MS Excel
spreadsheet
which I can then amend and import back into MS Access 2000. Presumably
a
similar thing could be done and imported into Oracle instead?
I'll let you know if we have any success.....

Maybe I could get HLF funding for somebody to cut and paste the text

The problem with converting xml data to the format that you
suggest
is that it represents a more complex structure that can't easily
be
'flattened'. It is relatively easy to extract individual pieces of
data, either by using xml techniques (such as xslt) or simple
programs, but you do have to hand-craft them to meet specific
requirements. I've used perl scripts to extract bits such as
post-code that we didn't have already.
Even if you had an import routine, you would have to be careful
what
it did (by way of overwriting/adding to existing records and
problems
like that).

I know this was discussed a week or two back but am I the

one who can't do anything with the xml data on the EH Listed
Buildings cd?
As an Oracle user who won't benefit from the free import
tool
for Exegesis users I am at a complete loss as to what to do
with it.
Anyone out there who can help convert it to a useable format
for me? Something old fashioned like .dbf or .xls
................At least that way I can load it into ArcMap.
