Dear Members of the Geol. Soc. Hydrogeology Group
Holymoor Consultancy, in association with JDIH (Breedon, Derbyshire) and
GeoWarmth (Hexham, Northumberland), is organising a professional short
course on Friday 21st October 2005:
An Introduction to Ground Source Heat
Dunston Innovation Centre, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. 21/10/05
The course should be of particular interest to hydrogeologists, due to (i)
the strong analogy between subsurface heat conduction / convection and
groundwater flow / contaminant transport and (ii) the fact that many open-
loop ground source heat pump systems are based on groundwater abstraction
and reinjection.
The course will cover:
The subsurface as a heat reservoir
Ground source heat: historical and international perspective.
What is a ground source heat pump?
Options and applications for ground source heat pumps.
Installation: practical considerations.
The physics of subsurface heat flow, an introduction.
Open loop systems: introduction to design aspects.
Closed loop systems: an introduction to design aspects.
Thermal response testing.
The UK experience: supply, demand and economics.
The regulatory framework.
The course will run from 10:00 am to 16:50 pm. The cost of the course will
be £140, including course lecture pack, refreshments and a buffet lunch.
