Geographies of Muslim Masculinities
Papers are invited to a session which will explore the geographies of
Muslim masculinities. We hope to include papers which discuss the
intersections of gender, ethnicity, race, class, generation and place in a
range of different contexts. How are Muslim masculinities articulated,
theorised and understood? In what ways do discourses, ideologies and
practices vary in their representations and constructions of Muslim men?
How do explicitly Muslim masculinities interact with, play off against and
respond to other constructions of masculinities? How does the ‘war on
terror’ impact on the representation and articulation of Muslim
masculinities? What are the spatialities within which Muslim masculinities
are negotiated, practised and contested? Papers are invited which explore
the relationship between Islam, masculinity and space from any national or
geopolitical contexts and not only those places where Muslims
constitute ‘Immigrant Others’.
