Just part of a proper dig into the Arena archives, beginning with a whole
night of goodness and numerous other Arenas in the weeks to follow. BBC Four
is a cracking channel for archive material (I've almost forgiven them for
the hames they made of TV on Trial - if you have opted out of having Mark
Lawson and various others talking over the programmes like Beavis and
Butthead with CSEs, you will almost certainly not want 1/3 of the screen
obscured by graphics telling you how to bring them back). Last year's Summer
in the 60s season was superb, and one-offs like the recent Alan Plater night
are most welcome. The only caveat I have is that the channel has an annoying
habit of switching aspect ratios in mid-programme, but after a while you
remember to set the digibox manually (that is to say, once a year) to 4:3
where necessary.
Remember when BBC2 did theme nights that actually lasted more than a couple
of hours?
