Subject: artists' work survey
(apologies for any cross-posting)
Greetings!
I am researching the labor of artists, and would very much appreciate
your help. I am hoping for as many artists as possible to let me know
a little bit about their daily lives by filling out a form on the web.
Few have looked at the work that artists do, and I believe that the
consequences are significant.
As just one example, artists are rarely compensated adequately for the
work that they do; this makes sense when you realize that a viewer
might see a painting and assume that 60 hours of work went into its
physical production - the viewer does not usually see the textual
research, preliminary drawings, travel, interviews, materials
research, negotiation for the loan of studio space, negotiations with
shipping companies, meetings with curators, and many other tasks that
might have gone into the production of the painting and which are
necessary in order for the painting to be exhibited. Until it is clear
what sorts of work artists actually do, it will be difficult to argue
for realistic compensation.
If you have a few minutes to help, I would appreciate your input. Go to
http://www.hostelprojects.org/work
and fill out the form you will find there. There's only one question,
and it will only take a few minutes of your time.
With this survey I am hoping to gather data from artists in all
fields, from all parts of the world. If you identify yourself as an
artist, I would like to hear from you. If you know any artists, please
forward this e-mail along to them. I am very grateful for your time
and energy.
