seminar:
Gender Inequalities in Ageing Societies
1pm-5pm, Tuesday October 4th 2005
Queens' College, University of Cambridge
Men and women in ageing societies face different kinds of inequalities in
both health and wealth. Simple analysis suggests that men may be richer but
they die younger. Yet it is essential to understand the ways in which
gender inequalities intersect with education, class and locality to create
a more complete picture of ageing. This seminar explores these issues
through three interlinked sessions:
i) health inequalities in ageing societies;
ii) wealth inequalities across the lifecourse;
iii) global challenges and policy perspectives.
Speakers include:
Sara Arber (Professor of Sociology, University of Surrey)
Emily Grundy (Professor of Demographic Gerontology, London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London)
Kate Jopling (Senior Public Affairs Officer, Help the Aged)
Heather Joshi (Professor of Economic and Developmental Demography,
Institute of Education, University of London)
James Nazroo (Professor of Medical Sociology, Department of Epidemiology
and Public Health, University College London)
Chaired by Ceridwen Roberts, Department of Social Policy and Social Work,
University of Oxford
Organised by Jackie Scott, Network Co-ordinator, ESRC Gender Equality
Network, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Cambridge,
