Well said, yes his last words on the list were indeed to Rowley at the end
of July. I didn't know him very well off the list, but his presence on the
list was nothing short of remarkable, and I remember missing that when he
left for most of last year.
And Mike, I don't know if his early death was anything to do with work (I
don't wish to pry into the details) but, suffice it to say, I get the
impression he didn't have much of a life outside of work because of
departmental pressures. And that makes me somewhat bitter, to say the least,
and if his hospital managers suffer in the next few months because of his
absence, then the word schadenfreude surely springs to mind. That really
does upset me.
Reading some of his old mail from the late 90s makes you not sure whether to
laugh or to cry: he really was a remarkable wit with an irrepressible sense
of fun; you could compile a book just on those musings alone. Well, the man
who brought us "Trick and Treat" just cannot be replaced. This list will be
a poorer place without him.
