I'd say they are functions (memory) and processes (mind perhaps) of the
brain.

well I just called someone on something they wrote to me 6 months ago and
clearly had forgotten they had written - it was only that their stance then
and now are so different and contradictory and full of threat to another,
that I had to mention it
So I can tell you what happens when a specific unnamed individual is faced
with the reality of their own rewriting - they go absolutely apeshit and
start trying to destroy the person who has made them face it by calumny and
bullying. It's very unpleasant; but, it has to be admitted, a great source
of material for a writer if one has the self-contol to write it all down
