The change to the BSCALE and BZERO headers arises in NDF2FITS. It reflects
the data limits for the NDF and chosen output BITPIX. I presume therefore that
you are working in FITS throughout, i.e. NDF_FORMATS_OUT starts with a FITS
extension, rather than a fullstop, meaning NDF. The format conversions will
degrade your throughput, although the scripts will look cleaner.
If you are sticking to FITS only, then you need to revise the on-the-fly
conversion (see $CONVERT_DIR/convertndf). By default its FITS2NDF command has
the format-conversion parameter FMTCNV switched on. You probably do not want
that type conversion. The alternative is for the back conversion; I think you
want BITPIX=0 rather than BITPIX=-1 as offered by the automatic conversion.
I can double check this given a test file.
Summary: it's a feature of CONVERT, not a bug in KAPPA.
