Hi Jess, clearly these people were unfamiliar with the highly respected
Romantic Circles website! http://www.rc.umd.edu/

Mark Lawson on BBC Newsnight
Hi Sue and everyone,
I've mostly been lurking, listening intently to the conversations but
this last post of Sue's struck a chord....
I wonder if the U.K. "critical literati" are, in a way, afraid of what
this kind of technology might mean. A few months ago I presented a
paper for the British Association for Romantic Studies. Although my
studies on hypertext fiction and narrative theory are not closely
related to Romanticism, they invited me to discuss my comparison between
M.D. Coverley's The Lacemaker and Madame de Lafayette's La Princess de
Cleves. For me it was certainly and interesting experience - including
the tweed-clad audience didn't look like my usual audience. After my
20min presentation in which I used powerpoint images and audio to help
the group "picture" what I meant when I said hypertext can be a multi of
everything; it was time for questions.
The first question came from a 50ish man with a walking stick in the
front row: "Why bother study this stuff which isn't as good as the
original writing? Does anything write like Joyce online anyway?"
The second question came from the depths of the back row in a male
voice: "What will happen to our jobs?"
The rest of the question time involved me placating most of the audience
who seemed to be concerned that students wouldn't want to learn 18thC or
Romanticism lit...they would rather have the "inferior" (their words)
hypertext. And then that people like me would take their jobs as there
would be no need for their teaching. Hrm...
