Okay. I set both $FC and $F77 (both to the same value). I'll stop doing
that. I note that 'g95' is not in the known list of compilers (gfortran
is). This is silly given that g95 works and gfortran doesn't.

That's what I did. Just did both though.

Unsetting $F77 does indeed remove that warning (although the warning could
be a bit more specific!)

All I want is $FCFLAGS to be included in the preprocessor tests :-(

Wibble. I had a look at fortran.m4 and I couldn't even work out how the
tests were created. It seemed to just set a variable and that was it.

If I set $FFLAGS things don't get any further so I don't think that's the
fix.

More complicated than expected? I've attached the config.log for astrom
for clarity. It's funny how it gives up on g95-64 and then tries to
fallback to g77 -E in conjunction with g95 and then forgets the $FCFLAGS.

Note that the test for "preprocessable Fortran" passes (because it uses
$FCFLAGS) but the next test 'checking for fixed form Fortran preprocessor
features' fails because no $FFLAGS.

So the tests are fundamentally half-baked and inconsistent rather than
being completely wrong.
