Patsy,
Just to buck the trend I think 25 yrs is quite a reasonable retention
period.
While I am in Australia and there is obviously going to be differences
in legal requirements, NSW State Records publishes General Disposal
Authorities that govern retention periods for government agencies,
including many employee related records for example (as taken from
GDA12)
Records summarising the employment or service history of an employee or
volunteer including:
Employee history card
Service card (including electronic versions)
Note
This is regardless of whether the employee is permanent, temporary or
casual.
Note
Summary records may include details such as: identification number,
name, date of birth, address, contacts, date appointed, status, position
and dates held, locations worked, promotions and higher duties and dates
held, salary rates, allowances. For more information refer to Part 2
section 2.5 Identifying records required as State archives
These records are required as State Archives (ie permanent records),
also records relating to leave and long term entitlements are required
to be held for 75 years.
Just some food for thought
Cheers
