2. YR ADRAN DROS DDIWYLLIANT, Y CYFRYNGAU A CHWARAEON
VAT refunds for University museums that offer free admission
48 university museums and galleries across the country can from today
reclaim their VAT thanks to the extension of the Government's free access
policy. The free access policy is a cornerstone of this Government's
cultural policy which will now also recognise the essential work of these
university museums and galleries, who provide regular free admission to the
public to view permanent collections or exhibits, by allowing them to
reclaim the VAT they have paid on their running costs.
http://www.culture.gov.uk/global/press_notices/archive_2005/dcsm108_2005.htm

The process for claiming VAT refunds is set out in VAT notice 998. This will
be updated to include the listing of eligible university museums, but the
refund procedure is as set out. The notice can found at www.hmrc.gov.uk
<http://www.hmrc.gov.uk> by going to this site, typing 'museums' in the
search field and the 3rd entry should take you to the VAT Notice. In order
to claim, a qualifying body already registered for VAT will include any
'scheme figures' on its VAT return, as per the advice in the Notice. Those
that aren't registered for VAT should claim in writing in the format, and to
the address, given in the Notice.
If after reading the Notice, you have unresolved queries, then you will need
to speak to the VAT National Advice Service. The enquiries help line is open
8am to 8pm Monday to Friday on 0845 010 9000

3.1 Culture Minister defers export of rare gold coin
Culture Minister David Lammy has placed a temporary export bar on a gold
coin, issued during the reign of Coenwulf, king of Mercia (796-821). This
will provide a last chance to raise the money to keep the coin in the United
Kingdom.

3.2 Questionnaire Relating to Digital Licensing Scheme for Cultural
Organisations
Digital management of copyright material is increasingly relevant to
museums, libraries and archives. For some projects, ranging from large scale
digitisation programmes to one-off website projects, it is absolutely
critical to delivering the project's objectives. Copyright law currently
gives cultural organisations virtually no lee-way, which means that the cost
of copyright research and clearance activity can be huge and occasionally
prohibitive.

The Montgomeryshire Canal and Lake Vyrnwy are two unique water features in
Wales. However, although both were man-made their purpose and target

examples of 18th and 19th century heritage and the exhibition will explore
their social, economic and architectural history. The exhibition is part of
a larger project including educational facilities for school, talks and
walks by specialists as well as improvements at Canal Yard outside the
