medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (8. August) is the feast day of:
Altman (d. 1091) Altman was born in Paderborn (Germany), where he
became a canon and master of the cathedral school. He went on to be
an imperial chaplain, went on a massive pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and
became bishop of Passau. He sponsored the canon regular movement,
introduced Cluniac customs in one of the monasteries of his diocese,
and supported Gregory VII in the Investiture Contest. He then fled
to Rome.
Dominic (d. 1221) Dominic always seems to be overshadowed by Francis
of Assisi. Is there a good biography of him? D's parents prepared
him for the church, and he duly became a canon of Osma Cathedral. He
traveled with Bishop Diego to Denmark and, while they were returning,
stayed in Languedoc to argue with Cathars. Diego had to go back to
his episcopal duties, but Dominic stuck with his new preaching
mission and gradually attracted followers, the core of the Order of
Preachers. He refused to become a bishop three times. He was
canonized in 1234.
