hello Mary and list members.
cc: general Dublin Core list
i'm not on the DC Guide listserv, but i would like to see some discussion
of the following terms, which i think warrant addition to the
Dublin Core glossary.
1. automatic metadata generation
2. manual metadata generation
3. metadata extraction (taking from resource content)
4. metadata harvesting (harvesting existing metadata)
5. metadata derivation (deriving metadata from system properties)
6. metadata tools (editors and generators, templates) [each of which have
distinct meaning]
7. metadata creators (experts, specialists, enthusiasts, authors)
[different classes of people]
i recall hearing that Dublin Core glossary terms need to be specific to
the Dublin Core/community.
these terms are fundamental to all metadata activities, including Dublin
Core activities. additionally, the glossary stands as a key resource for
many metadata communities, and includes the names of many standards, e.g.,
EAD, MODS, and so forth.
the glossary is an outstanding tool, and serves as an important tool to
anyone learning about (or teaching about) metadata. these terms are
important, and i would love to see some discussion and consideration of
their addition to the glossary.
re: Harvester. the current definition is very specific to OAI.
there are many tools that "harvest" (and thus act as harvesters) even if
they are *not* harvesting OAI compliant metadata.
also, i believe the term "ontology" should be reviewed. ontologies are
"generally" hierarchical, but not always. think of WordNet. "ontology"
might be reviewed in relation to the concept "taxonomy."
RE: my list of suggested additions/considerations. i would be pleased to
provide literature references.
thanks for taking time to read my email.
look forward to seeing folks in Madrid.
best wishes, jg
