Call for Papers: Association of American Geographers Annual Conference
Chicago, USA, March 7th – 11th 2006
Nature, Science and Law: Legal Geographies of Nature
Convenors: Emily Quinton and Samuel Randalls (University of Birmingham, UK)
The question of nature is at the forefront of geography. With developing
concerns about biodiversity reduction, climate change and environmental
pollution, never has the science of nature and the nature represented by
science become so critical. Yet nature and science are both constructed
through and bounded within law and regulatory practices. On the one hand are
international treaties on climate change and biodiversity, while on the
other both science and nature are being patented, and litigation is invoked
against ‘natural events or disasters’. These legal geographies are
mobilized at a wide variety of scales by a wide variety of actors in often
conflicting ways. This session aims to explore these legal geographies of
nature (and nature’s representations and representatives).
Topics of interest include:
• Legal geographies of nature
• Legal geographies of science
• Environmental governance and law
- Scales (local, national, international) of environmental law and
governance and the interactions between them
• Difficulties and opportunities for implementing environmental law
• International legal frameworks e.g. Kyoto Protocol or the Convention on
Biological Diversity
• Case-studies of environmental law in practice
