Around 25 years ago I worked for Walker Wingsail Systems, who aimed to
produce vertical 'wings' that could be used to improve the efficiency of
conventional cargo ships, but the company failed to market them
effectively - the history is at

companies are also developing this technology now that oil prices are
rapidly increasing.
