Salary up to £21,594 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance,
depending on qualifications and experience.
Applications are invited for a research assistant to work under the
supervision of Dr Nicholas Bryan-Kinns, on an EPSRC funded project to
develop established research into commercial protoypes.
In recent years we have seen the wide acceptance of informal personal
technologies novel forms of conversation such as text messaging on
mobile phones. Similarly, there has been an increase in the use of
personal music making systems and digital audio devices. However, no
technology has yet exploited the role of music in social interaction -
one of musics fundamental roles for millennia. This project builds on
our previous research to bring together music, messaging, and
creativity in order to provide a new form of social interaction -
ad-hoc mobile group music.
The project will develop and evaluate a prototype to allow people to
remotely create ringtones together through their mobile phones. Market
research indicates that music and ringtones are of expanding value and
this application could become the next form of texting. Commercial
exploitation of the technology is through licensing of the concept and
application, as well as development of a billing platform for the group
interaction.
Candidates should have a Masters degree in Computer Science or
equivalent experience. In particular, the candidate should have
experience of developing novel interactive systems and some experience,
or understanding of, a commercial environment. Candidates will be
considered who have a subset of these skills and are keen to develop
the other required skills.
Applications in the form of a letter and curriculum vitae with the
names and email addresses of two academic referees, who may be
contacted prior to interview, must be sent to: Sue White, Department of
Computer Science, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road,
