Dear BACS mailing list subscribers,
This is to ask for your support as colleagues working in Chinese Studies
and Japanese Studies at SOAS are making a desperate attempt to save the
SOAS Library specialist librarians for Chinese Studies and Japanese
Studies, who were made redundant yesterday.
The decision to make these two librarians redundant came out of the blue.
No consultation with any academics in the affected fields has taken place.
SOAS Library will now be left without anyone possessing the specialist
knowledge to take care of its Chinese-language and Japanese-language
holdings.
As soon as the news broke last Thursday, SOAS colleagues have protested the
decision in extremely strong language, yet so far this has not had any
result. We need support from outside to make our Management realise what a
serious mistake they have made.
If you care about the SOAS Library and its Chinese and Japanese holdings,
please voice your protest in an email to our Director, Prof Colin Bundy
([log in to unmask]) and to our Librarian, Ms Anne Poulson ([log in to unmask]).
Please also copy your message to me. The Librarians in question have until
Thursday this week to appeal. Any support you might be able to express this
week would be greatly appreciated.
Please feel free to pass this message on to anyone who might be interested.
Kind regards,
Michel Hockx
Professor of Chinese in the University of London
