Down here in sunny Somerset we use a thesaurus-like structure to hold dates
so for example 1939 is part of Second World War (and also part of 1930s). We
then use the most specific term possible. We use Modern as a parent for C20
and C21 so have the best of both worlds.
We use WW2 as a period because it is specifically associated with a large
number of physical remains. We don't use Tudor, Victorian etc as these are
historical periods that don't have a close correlation to the nature of
monuments. They are also, in many cases, a description of an architectural
style rather than a period. I'd be against Victorian as I live in a
"Victorian" house which is actually Edwardian, and if you start using
Edwardian you need the number as well!
