I am carrying out research into a body on migrants who moved from the south
and east of England to the manufacturing districts of Lancashire, Cheshire,
Derbyshire and the West Riding in the 1830s.
One of the aspects I will be examining is their acceptance by the indigenous
workforce. While there has been much written on the mechanics of migration,
there seems to have been little work published on interaction between rural
migrants from other parts of England and indigenous urban populations.
Keith Snell's paper "The culture of local xenophobia" (Social History, volt
28, no, 2003) does look at the reaction to incoming migrants, but mainly in
an entirely rural context. Does any one on the list know of any relevant
research in this area?
Thanks in advance,
Peter Park,
