Nasty Girls in "Time Troupers"
Thursday 11th August - Friday 19th August 2005 @ 4.15 daily (except Mon 15th)
Theatre Workshop, Hamilton Place, Edinburgh EH3 5AX
It's no use trying to hide behind the sofa as the four disabled women comedians who are Nasty Girls whisk you off on an unsettling trip through time.
It's 2005 and when the unlikely heroines push open the door to the accessible toilet, they are gobsmacked at what they discover on the other side. What is the Re-Tardis? Who is the mysterious "Time Lord" and what is the special mission he has in store for them? Join them as they bump into disabled characters who never quite made it into the history books. Take a peek at a truly criptastic future. Isn't it spooky how everyone they encounter looks strangely like themselves? Was it really Dickens who penned those classics? Did Shakespeare worry about making his plays accessible to the blind? Did the Doctor actually manage to rid the world of Daleks? Will Orcs one day rule the caravan sites of North Wales? Nasty Girls will reveal all.
Liverpool based disabled women's comedy troupe, Nasty Girls, was set up 2001. Their confrontational, controversial brand of humour centres on disability and attitudes towards it. Anne Cunningham, the writer of the show, says: " We don't set out to shock. We want to have a good time and entertain people, while making them see things in a slightly different way. The uncomfortable factor sometimes comes about because people are laughing and then thinking: 'should we be laughing at this?'"
This slightly offbeat comedy is proving very popular. Their previous show "Molotov Criptales" played to packed houses at London and Liverpool Comedy Festivals and major national disability festivals:
"Shocking, disreputable and very funny" Disability Now
" A sketch show that will have you laughing and thinking deeply... a refreshing break from the Fringe norm that will appeal to everyone" Three Weeks
"Willfully silly" Chortle
Their latest production, Time Troupers, premiered at the Kickstart Festival, Vancouver in September 2004, followed by a short British tour. The girls have built on their reputation for fast paced, satirical and downright silly comedy:
"Daring, different and daft - fans of the Fast Show and Little Britain, this show is for you" Coalition magazine
"Wicked sense of humour combined with sharp take on life from a disabled point of view, creates refreshingly different form of comedy" Arberry Profile
"Criptastic" Time Out
Nasty Girls devise, write and perform their own material. They have appeared on Granada TV, Radio 4 Woman's Hour and been winners of Best Touring Company in the DaDa Fest (Deaf and Disability Arts) Awards in 2003 and 2004. Shows incorporate the use of digital media, spoken English and British Sign Language.
Nasty Girls are: Cerrie Burnell, Sarah Caltieri, Anne Cunningham and Natalie Markham. Music is by Keith Alexander. Tickets £8.00/£5.00 from Theatre Workshop 0131 226 5425 or Fringe Box Office.
