These programmes use real-time access to server logs to monitor the active
IP addresses browsing the website and the behaviour (what pages they visit,
what browser they use, language, country etc) of the visitor to the site.
So typically, if you have been browsing products on a website using these
systems will allow the sales consultant to pro-actively force a chat,
usually when they notice that the visitor is displaying buying behaviour,
i.e. browsing the product pages. Some companies may use them on the support
pages too.
Some people think it adds a nice personal touch to the online experience,
others find it an intrusion and worry about "being watched" - but if you
are browsing the web logs are recorded anyway.
Have a look at:
www.velaro.com
www.livehelper.com
as good examples - and there are some screenshots on there too if you want
to see what they look like at the customer service end.
