Dear Social Policy List Member
On 16th July draft statements of the criteria and working methods for each of the 15 main panels and 67 sub-panels were published for consultation on the RAE web-site. Please go to the following link for the official announcement:

The Social Work and Social Policy & Administration draft guidance can be found at: http://www.rae.ac.uk/pubs/2005/04/docs/j40.doc <http://www.rae.ac.uk/pubs/2005/04/docs/j40.doc>
The RAE notice states that "Everyone with an interest in the outcomes of the 2008 RAE now has an opportunity to comment on the draft criteria and working methods of the assessment panels."
"The consultation is structured to seek views about the extent to which the panels and sub-panels have addressed the key reforms for RAE 2008. In particular, it asks for comments on the extent to which consistency has been achieved between main and sub-panels, the weightings of the different components of the quality profile, the ways in which the panels will assess applied and practice-based research, and the panels’ consideration of the vitality and sustainability of research in their respective disciplines."
"Respondents may comment on any part of the main and sub-panels' criteria statements, but HEFCE invites specific comments on certain core aspects of all the statements."
Consultation responses should be made using the ONLINE FORM by 1200 on Monday 19th September 2005. HEFCE "regrets that it will not be possible to consider any response received after that time". The online consultation form can be found at:
http://www.rae.ac.uk/pubs/2005/04/consult/ <http://www.rae.ac.uk/pubs/2005/04/consult/>
"The UK funding bodies welcome responses from all interested parties, including subject associations, professional bodies, universities and colleges and other interested parties. The outcomes of the consultation will be considered by the main and sub-panels in the autumn, and the final criteria statements will be published in early 2006. Alongside the recently published ‘Guidance on submissions’ (RAE 03/2005), the final critieria and working methods will provide institutions with the information needed to prepare their submissions by 30 November 2007."
THE SOCIAL POLICY ASSOCIATION WILL BE MAKING A FORMAL RESPONSE AS PART OF THIS CONSULTATION. IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR VIEWS TO BE CONSIDERED AND INCLUDED AS PART OF THE SPA RESPONSE, PLEASE EMAIL YOUR COMMENTS TO [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> BY FRIDAY 26 AUGUST AT THE LATEST. IT WOULD BE HELPFUL IF YOU COULD STRUCTURE YOUR COMMENTS USING THE ONLINE FORM AS A GUIDE. (You can of course submit your comments directly to HEFCE using the online form in your own right as an individual, an interested party, or as a higher education institution etc.)
Professor Saul Becker, Chair, Social Policy Association [log in to unmask]
