International Geographical Union Regional Conference (IGU)

Commission on Modelling Geographical Systems (CMGS)
         Conference
Brisbane, 3rd – 7th July 2006

Title: ‘Spaced In or Spaced Out
                          ncluding special sessions on

‘The Legends of Quantitative Geography’

Call for Papers

IGU Conference will be held in Brisbane from July 3-7th 200with the New
Zealand Geographical Society and the Institute of Australian Geograh Annual
Conference.

The conference page is located at: www.igu2006.org The Chair of the
Conference Organisation Committee is Professor John Holmes.Email:

The CMGS is sponsoring a number of sessions in this conference with support
from the Australian Research Council Research Network in Spatially
Integrated SoScience (ARCRNSISS). As a major initiative, it is organising
special sessions under title, ‘Legends of the Quantitative Revolution in
Geography’, to celebrate the achievements of sixty years of theoretical and
quantitative geography. An important theme for this conference is to
recognise the major contributions of scholars to the evolution of
geographical models, theory and quantitative methods.

The conference is entitled: ‘Spaced In or Spaced Out’

A number of sessions are planned which include the following modelling and
quantitative themes:

• Statistics in Spaces
• Economy in Spaces
• Migration in Spaces
• Behaviour in Spaces
• Change in Spaces
• The Language of Spaces
• Visualisation of Spaces
• Geometry in Spaces
• Networks in Spaces
• Simulation in Spaces
• Nature in Spaces
• Mapping of Spaces
• Health in Spaces
• Data Mining of Spaces
• Computation of Spaces

The Commission wants to include special sessions together within the above
themes (or others) under the following title

• Legends of the IGU Modelling Commission

The Commission will solicit papers from scholars who have made a
substantial contribution to the evolution of knowledge through the IGU in
the above or other themes. It is hoped that they will provide an overview
of their work and developments in their fields as the basis for plenary
sessions. This will form a special section of the conference and as part of
the celebration, a conference dinner will be held and where formal
recognition will be made of the ‘Legends’ and a memento presented to every
conference participan. This will be dependent on funding.

Other key issues could be discussed in forums within the conference, such
as:

• Are There Limits to Local Spatial Statistical Methods?
• The Future of Geographical Modelling?

The Legends’ papers will provide the first section of a proposed book
entitled ‘Legends of Geography: Celebrating Sixty Years of Theoretical and
Quantitative Geography’ commemorating the discipline since the beginning
of quantitative revolution in geography and the role that the IGU Modelling
Commission has had in the development of theoretical and quantitative
geography. The second section of the book will be a selection of focused
papers Brisbane conference or developed from it and preferably on the
Legends’ themes. Other papers under different themes could be published in
special editions of books or journals.

We also hope to provide a good social time for our participants and there
will be a social convener for this conference to achieve this goal

Those interested in submitting an abstract and attending the conference
please return the pre-registration form by September 30 2005 (email or fax)
to:

We also plan to offer a joint session with the IGU Commission
on “Monitoring Cities of Tomorrow”, on the theme of Monitoring Urban
Systems: Theory and Applications.

Papers are encouraged that incorporate recent developments from:

• modelling cities of the future;
• multi-level modelling;
• spatial analysis of urban form and process;
• spatial statistics in an urban context;
• geoscience in monitoring urban systems;

although other papers relevant to the theme are also very welcome.

Those interested in submitting an abstract and attending this session(s)
please return the pre-registration form by September 30 2005 (email or fax)
to:

There could be other sessions co-sponsored with Commissions such
as “Applied Geography’

Individuals who wish to present a paper to any of the above sessions should
submit an abstract (maximum length 250 words) to the above organisers.
Abstracts must reach the organiser by e-mail before 20th December, 2005.
Then, a decision on whether the abstract has been accepted for presentation
will be communicated to you before 30th January, 2006. Accepted abstracts
will be submitted to the Main Conference Organisers by the CMGS on your
behalf.

Those interested in organising a workshop on any of these themes, please
let the organisers know asap.

IGU Conferences present unique opportunities for the presentation of new
research and to network with an international audience. Further, it
provides an opportunity to recognise major contributions of scholars to
theoretical and quantitative geography. Without your support this would not
be possible.

Best Wishes

Dr Robert Baker
Chair CMGS
