Duncan
Thanks for the tip, that is very useful advice. I have just purchased
the preferred version - I work in an open plan office and didn't fancy
talking in front of the pc at all times, especially with confidential
interviews.

A rather late contribution to this thread, but I hope it's still useful
to
some.
Dragon Naturally Speaking has a number of versions
<http://scansoft.com/naturallyspeaking/matrix/>. With Preferred and
Professional you can set it to work on a downloaded WAV file. This could
be
useful if you are away from your PC, but want to get to work on
re-dictating your interview recordings and have access to a player and a
(digital) recorder. You listen to your original recording and then
repeat
it into your second recorder just as others have suggested you do
directly
into DNS. Later on you can download this recording (in your voice only)
and
set DNS to work transcribing it without having to sit in front of the PC
for hours speaking. When it's finished you can do the correction work on
it
to help improve its recognition accuracy.
There may be some slight differences in recording quality, but regular
advice about settings and environment for the initial interview still
apply
(see for example my 'Making and managing audio recordings' in Clive
Seale
(ed) (2004) Researching society and culture. London: Sage
<http://www.rscbook.co.uk/>)
I work this way to compose things away from the PC to help with reducing
RSI-related symptoms. It's also useful for tracking odd
thoughts/insights
when writing them down would be difficult.
