Hi David
Is it not a misprint which should read "Tail Gate Keeper"

Please respond to
"The mining-history
list."
Nail Gate Keeper" and "Nail Gate Porter" are NOT in Greenwell's 1888
glossary of terms for Northumberland and Durham
Closest listings are -
Gateway - "a passage through the goaf secured by a pack-wall on each side
for the purpose of bringing out the coals worked on the long wall system"
and
Plate Nails - "used in laying tram plates or bridge rails, to nail the
plates or rails to the sleepers. They weigh about 22 pounds; are 2 to 2 1/2
inches long and are made with flat countersunk heads, round shafts and flat
points"
Interesting quotes but not helpful I fear
Regards
David
