List members living in or visiting the South West in September may be
interested to know that included among the Heritage Open Days on
September 10th will be two guided walks around Brookwood and Wheal Emma
copper mines in Buckfastleigh. This was south Devon's largest copper
mine and has recently been the subject of a large-scale survey by
English Heritage.
This is a rare opportunity to visit this site, which is on private land,
not generally accessible to the public. It contains 2 ruined engine
houses, 7 wheelpits (including 1 @ 60ft), dressing floors, open shafts
etc, as well as being the destination of the famous 20km-long Wheal Emma
leat.
I'll be leading 2 walks (10 AM and 2PM) for which the number is
restricted to 20 for each walk. List members will be very welcome,
(especially anyone with specialist knowledge of late-19th century copper
dressing), but book early.

Best wishes
