I don't know if it was common in the TB sanatoria, but the National
Sanatorium at Benenden in Kent had a band which played the patients "in" on
admission and "out" at discharge (they were often in for many months, up to
a year or two). I don't know that much of the history of such a band is
known, and I suspect it was much of a scratch affair according to what
musicians were available as inmates. The uniforms seem to have been
deliberately ragged - some still exist in the museum at Benenden Hospital
