Gilbert White and Recording: Past, Present and Future.
A Conference celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Gilbert White's House
and The Oates Museum, 20th September 2005,
The School of Biological Sciences, Southampton University.
Join top scientists, including Lord May of Oxford, President of the
Royal Society, to address key conservation issues and debate the ongoing
importance of recording in the natural sciences. Gilbert White
(1720-1793) led the way with his Natural History of Selborne; his legacy
has triggered vitally important and innovative work by both professional
and amateurs.

for the full Conference programme and booking form, together with an
invitation to a reception at Gilbert's own home, The Wakes in Selborne
on the evening of 19th September.
Besides Lord May, our speakers include Professor Jeremy Greenwood,
British Trust for Ornithology; Mr Bob Headland, Scott Polar Research
Institute, University of Cambridge; Professor John Lawton, Chairman of
the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution; Professor Guy Poppy,
University of Southampton; Dr David Roberts, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew;
Ms Sarah Whild, University of Birmingham; Dr Dick Vane-Wright, Natural
History Museum.
Good conservation and so much of the development in the biological
sciences depends on good recording. We very much hope you will feel able
to support the Conference by circulating the above information. This
will be acknowledged in the conference pack. Proceeds from the
conference will go to support the Gilbert White Field Studies Centre at
the Gilbert White Museum in its work to introduce young people to the
wonders of the natural world.
