Attention Responsive Technology – ART
Applications are invited for a PhD studentship which will be named after
the late David Wooding, former moderator of this list. The studentship is
available for three years, to be supervised by Professor Alastair Gale
with Dr Fangmin Shi. The successful candidate will join the ESRC/EPSRC/DTI
funded project 'ART' which is developing Attention Responsive
Technologies.
The aim of the project is to research and develop a real time computer
vision system to respond to a user’s attention to controllable ICT
devices in such an environment where the user’s mobility is either
impaired or movement is undesirable. The user’s visual attention will be
monitored by an eye tracking system ( we are currently using two systems),
together with an environmental image processing system, and relayed to a
simple GUI dialogue for selecting an appropriate ICT device. The
successful candidate is expected to work in the areas of eye movement
analyses, perform user trials, design appropriate GUIs and assist other
project researchers to develop and test the full ART system.
The studentship is suitable for a graduate in a human sciences discipline
(e.g. ergonomics, psychology) with programming ability, or for a computer
science graduate with interest in human computer interfaces. Candidates
should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second class honours
degree (or equivalent). A willingness to perform in a team, learning new
knowledge and working with end users who may be mobility restricted is
essential. A good knowledge of Matlab or C++ is desirable but not
necessary.
The studentship covers the maintenance payment of £10,000 p.a. (2005/06)
plus University fees at the UK/EU rate.
Further information may be obtained by contacting Alastair via email or
phone (details below).
Closing date is 5th September 2005
