If you are interested in analyses of the intersections between gender, sexuality, and disability, as well as the combination of disability studies with feminist philosophy and political philosophy, and you will be in Washington, DC, at the beginning of September, you should check out the American Political Science Association conference which runs from Sept. 1-4 (with preconference meetings on August 31). On Sept. 1 at 10:15am, I and other disability theorists will participate in the following session chaired by feminist legal scholar Martha Fineman:
Intersections and Fluid Identities: Gender, Sexuality and Disability
Chair: Martha L. Fineman, Emory University
Authors: Theorizing "Culture" or Cultural Contestation? Deaf Identities and Transsexual Identities
Rita Dhamoon, University of British Columbia
Quirky Citizens: Autism and the Anti-Normalization of Politics
Kristin Bumiller, Amherst College
An Examination of the Intersection of Multiple Identities -- Disability, Sexuality and Gender -- and Prenatal/Genetic Testing
Chloe G.K. Atkins, University of Calgary
Reproductive Freedom, Self-Regulation, and the Government of Impairment in Utero
Shelley Tremain, University of Toronto, Mississauga
Discussant: Ruth O'Brien, CUNY Graduate Center
As far as I can tell, our session is the only one on disability theory. But the same morning at 8am there is a session entitled "Who Cares?" that includes a paper on Eva Kittay's work and other papers on dependency and interdependency.
The full program can be viewed at: http://www.apsanet.org/mtgs/program/. The conference takes place at 3 hotels; and hotel/room locations of indivdual sessions won't be publicized until later this summer.
(p.s. The paper I will be presenting is forthcoming in Maternal Bodies, a special issue of Hypatia: A Journal of Feminist Philosophy, appearing in early 2006).
Best regards,
Shelley Tremain
