Subject: FW: Literature Search Protocols for TV research community

Dear Colleagues

Our librarians have developed this tool to assist researchers in preparing searches to support research proposals, although I think it will also have other uses. The Cochrane Centre have been involved in the work but see below for more info. The documents will be posted on NLH in due course.

A new tool to assist staff undertaking healthcare research in conducting effective literature searches is now available at http://www.tvsha.nhs.uk/libraries/useful-documents.html <http://www.tvsha.nhs.uk/libraries/useful-documents.html> . The Literature Search Protocols have been developed by the Thames Valley Health Libraries Network and aim to help researchers identify key sources of information, plan and carry out an effective search and to document the search process.

This is a working document which will be regularly reviewed to ensure that it is of benefit to the research community - ongoing feedback is actively encouraged and can be submitted via the evaluation form included in the document. Please contact Sarah Lewis & Belinda Hylton if you have any comments or queries about the protocols.

Content-Type: multipart/alternative;

* Do you work in a UK library serving NHS staff (NHS, Academic,
voluntary organisation, professional association etcetera?)
* Would you like to gain a better understanding of the work of
clinicians in order to meet their information needs more effectively?
* Would you like to participate in a free distance learning course as
part of the FOLIO Programme over six weeks during September and October?

If your answer is yes then register now for the NLH FOLIO Course:
Understanding the Business of Clinical Care

This course will cover the main information needs of staff delivering
clinical care. It is particularly suitable for those with a clinical
librarian role but will be of value to anyone who wants to extend their
knowledge beyond their library walls to the actual work done by our main
clinical users. The course will examine the role of information in clinical
decision-making and the part that patient values play in the clinical
encounter. It will look at information needs associated with diagnosis,
treatment, prevention, aetiology and prognosis. It will also examine whether
librarians need to be clinically trained and will look at the importance of
understanding medical terminology. This course is funded by the NLH
Librarian Development Programme.

If you wish to register then complete the registration form at
http://www.nelh.nhs.uk/folio/register10.doc <http://www.nelh.nhs.uk/folio/register10.doc> and send it to Tricia Campsell
at [log in to unmask]

Please note that places will be offered to the first 50 applications
received by Tricia. Due to funding reasons this course is not currently
available outside the UK.
